KÁRTA // (counter) mapping the inalienable: eco-grief, care & connection

 

KÁRTA is multi-voiced counter-map – mot-kart – about loss of place, ecological care and inalienable landscapes.
Kárta is developed by Magdalena Haggärde, 70°N arkitektur, in collaboration with Noor produksjoner and website development by Isak Gustavsen.

Kárta challenges conventional narratives about land use, development, and resource extraction through a hybrid mapping approach that balances traditional cartography with artistic counter-mapping methods.

Kárta is both an independent artistic installation and a companion to the performance "Stilla - en forestilling", (Stilla – a performance / Stilla – a notion, as a double entendre) expanding the conversations that begin in the performance space.

Čoarvemátta opening day

Reminiscing the extraordinary experience it was being part of the opening of Čoarvemátta – the building housing the Sámi National Theatre Beaivváš & Sámi High School and Reindeer Herding School / Beaivváš Sámi Našunála Teáhter & Sami joatkkaskuvla ja boazodoalloskuvla.

From its very first day Čoarvemátta proved to be truly “the house of magic and knowledge” as expressed by the theatre director Rolf Degerlund.

We have still barely landed after the opening ceremony back in August:
The ambience, the strong and touching speeches, the fantastic concert-performance, the food by the arctic gastronomy students, the truly amazing art and duodji – and of course the people, many of whom have worked for years for the realization of this building.

Čoarvemátta – the new Sámi National Theatre & the Sámi High School and Reindeer Herding School

Čoarvemátta – the building housing the Sámi National Theatre Beaivváš & Sámi High School and Reindeer Herding School / Beaivváš Sámi Našunála Teáhter & Sami joatkkaskuvla ja boazodoalloskuvla / opened in Guovdageaidnu / Kautokeino, Sápmi / Northern Norway on August 21.

The project is developed in collaboration between the artist Joar Nango, the architectural firms Snøhetta and 70°N arkitektur, and is built by the entrepreneur Econor, for the client Statsbygg.

Ribas Piera International Prize for Landscape Architecture Schools to The Arctic University of Norway

The Arctic University of Norway has won the Ribas Piera International Prize for Landscape Architecture Schools at the Barcelona International Landscape Biennial. 

As part of the teaching team Magdalena, together with colleague Kjerstin and students Didrik, Sofie and Sverre, represented the landscape master program of UiT.

The Arctic University of Norway presents a curriculum anchored in ecological, cultural and economic reality that draws on history, legislation and assessment processes to independently identify the problems of each project.

We are invited by Project Baltia Magazine to participate at the exhibition and conference Cities N during the 6th Moscow Biennale of Architecture:

’Project Baltia magazine will present Cities N exhibition, dedicated to development and reconstruction of cities of Far North of Norway, Finland and Russia. For the exhibition we have chosen the projects that has positively influenced on the urban condition of Rovaniemi (Finland), Bodo and Tromso (Norway). The curators will also analyze the situation in Russian cities (Kirovsk, Kovdor, Arkhangelsk), located in the cold regions of country. Layered Landscapes Lofoten

We'll be teaching a master studio at BAS this winter and spring called Layered Landscapes Lofoten

In this master studio we work with Lofoten – one of the most unique and spectacular parts of the Norwegian coast – with a long and dramatic history connected to the sea and the fisheries, and small societies vulnerable to local changes in the fisheries, global impact and structural changes. The landscape is today highly contested due to political desires to start exploiting the oil and gas resources in the region – and not least due to an increasing influx of tourists.
The studio is about research, mapping and planning – providing tools for a possible methodical approach – as an alternative to today’s institutionalized planning regime or hegemonic thinking. The intention is always to stimulate for complex understanding, critical approaches and not least – intentionally a new production of subjectivity.
The studio encourages to open mind sets that are not obvious, predefined or limiting – but always: critical, open minded and curious. This process will be stimulated through texts, literature and lecturers – and not least encounters with various people and knowledge, practices and experiences from the landscape.
