The art project for Čoarvemátta

The art project for Čoarvemátta – the Sámi High School and the Sámi National Theatre Beaivváš in Guovdageaidnu / Kautokeino, takes as its point of departure art which is deeply rooted in the Sámi world perspective and in traditional knowledge.

The Sámi National Theatre Beaivváš presents stories and theatre performances from a Sámi world perspective, while the Sámi High School and Reindeer Husbandry School provides tuition in traditional knowledge, culture and language to Sámi youth. The overarching curatorial approach for the art project is based on two concepts or values that are both fundamental and deeply rooted in Sámi cultural understanding: vuoiŋŋalašvuohta, Sámi spirituality, and árbemáhttu, traditional knowledge.
Particular emphasis is placed on the representation of different geographical areas within Sápmi and selected artists that work with diverse approaches to traditional knowledge and spirituality - and to demonstrate the range and boundary-breaking aspects of Sámi art, from traditional duodji (Sámi handicrafts) to conceptual contemporary art.

Ribas Piera International Prize for Landscape Architecture Schools to The Arctic University of Norway

The Arctic University of Norway has won the Ribas Piera International Prize for Landscape Architecture Schools at the Barcelona International Landscape Biennial. 

As part of the teaching team Magdalena, together with colleague Kjerstin and students Didrik, Sofie and Sverre, represented the landscape master program of UiT.

The Arctic University of Norway presents a curriculum anchored in ecological, cultural and economic reality that draws on history, legislation and assessment processes to independently identify the problems of each project.

Layered Landscapes Lofoten - understanding of complexity, otherness and change has been selected by the jury to participate at the Architecture of Necessity exhibition at Virserum konsthall, Sweden, opening June 27.

We are invited by Project Baltia Magazine to participate at the exhibition and conference Cities N during the 6th Moscow Biennale of Architecture:

’Project Baltia magazine will present Cities N exhibition, dedicated to development and reconstruction of cities of Far North of Norway, Finland and Russia. For the exhibition we have chosen the projects that has positively influenced on the urban condition of Rovaniemi (Finland), Bodo and Tromso (Norway). The curators will also analyze the situation in Russian cities (Kirovsk, Kovdor, Arkhangelsk), located in the cold regions of country. The exhibition will show the works by architectural and urban design bureaus 70°N arkitektur, Rintala Eggertsson Architects, Arkkitehtitoimisto Juhani Pallasmaa Kommandiittiyhtiö, Urbanika, Mamoshin architects and others.’

Paris à l'automne

An autumnal trip to Paris included architectural experiences of both new and old favourites:

Sou Fujimoto's Many Small Cubes in Les Tuileries was part of the FIAC (hors les murs)

Fondation Cartier celebrates its 30 years with an in situ installation by Diller & Scofidio + Renfro: Ballade pour une boîte de verre / Musings on a Glass Box. It is always a pleasure to return to this early and excellent building by Jean Nouvel, and its garden and exhibitions.

Centre Pompidou of course. This time with Gehry, Duras and Duchamp..

Parisian rooftops with la Tour Eiffel in the mist was our morning view.

We were lucky to have the opportunity to experience Åsa Sonjasdotter's Haute Diversité - par le prisme de la patate at the art space le centquatre / 104, where we also found the Open Wall by Pascal Marthine Tayou and Niki de Saitn Phalle's fantastic Cabeza.
We were also happy to see that Jean-Luc Duez is still actively spreading Amour in the streets of Paris..

We're back from our study trip to Venice with lots of impressions and inspiration from the Biennale, and the city itself.

r/evolutionary narratives - associative stories from the albino/melanino animals in the State Darwin Museum at the 5th Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art

r a k e t a, a free flying free falling, interdisciplinary, collaborative institute based in Stockholm, invited us to take part in the exhibition 'Visitor #13 / Nursing Nature, Nature Nursing - footnotes in the Darwin Museum' at the 5th Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art, along with an international group of artists.

Our piece is called r/evolutionary narratives - associative stories from the albino/melanino animals and consists of a printed, transparent, adhesive film mounted on the albino/melanino animals’ showcase. Our work includes a mapping of the exposed albino/melanino animals: their origins, their dates of life and death, their way into the museum. All this information and yet other linked to facts, myths, scientific ideas and stories around the exposed species have found their place in the graphic representation.

Darwin’s Tree of life evolves into a Rhizome of life - a non-hierarchic system, where inheritance occurs in all directions, vertically and laterally, with innumerable crossings and interconnections.

There is neither a beginning nor an end to the mystery of existence. In a Pattern of Thought, any point can lead to yet another, following lines of flight that lead far away from the initial point of randomness.

By following and cultivating the imaginary with an open attitude, and freely connect facts, myths and fiction, new associative narrations form.

Two black wolves in Moscow can take us on an imaginary journey far away from their home in the Darwin museum. Their tales of historical events, scientific ideas, geographic localities and personal destinies form a complex cartography. As old fairy tales and myths served a mission in an unenlightened society, these new narrations open for interpretations into a present reality, and the dichotomy linked to valuation of diversity and otherness.

North norwegian architecture for children

Some pupils from Bjerkaker School have been working this week with architecture projects in the north of Norway. Our project in Lofoten was one of them. The occasion is an educational program on architecture based in the architecture exhibition "Små Spor" organized by Michele Widerøe. Read more about the exhibition on the blog:

Små Spor er produsert i regi av Michele Widerøe og Nord-Norges Arkitektforening og er en tilleggsutstilling om lokale arkitekter som vil gå parallellt med Nasjonalmuséets vandreutstilling “SPOR. Norsk arkitektur 2005–2010”. Små Spor ønsker å bidra til å holde liv i mye av det som har oppstått gjennom NALs 100-års markering og bidra til et varig engasjement for arkitektur i Nord-Norge.

Små Spor ønsker å skape et varig og mer kompetent engasjement for arkitektur og landskapsarkitektur i Tromsøs befolkning. Utstillingen vil presentere nordnorske prosjekter til lokalbefolkning og tilreisende og der igjennom øke fokus på arkitekter i landsdelen.

De senere årene har det vært et økende fokus på arkitektur, blant annet gjennom arrangementer lokalt og nasjonalt, gjennom utstillinger og andre arrangementer. Utstillingen “SPOR. Norsk arkitektur 2005–2010” som er produsert av Nasjonalmuseet i Oslo, presenterer et utvalg av det beste som norske arkitekter har produsert i de siste 5 årene. Men Nord-Norge er kun representert med to prosjekter

Nord-Norges arkitektforening vil bruke anledningen til å vise lokale arbeider, små ”perle” prosjekter som viser kvaliteter i nordområdene. En oppdagelsesferd i det som finnes i nord. Vi håper dette kan være med på å vise kvalitetene i nordområdene.

Norsk samtidsarkitektur 2005-2010

SPOR. Norwegian Architecture 2005-2010 at Nasjonalmuseet - Arkitektur Norsk arkitektur 2005–2010 Nasjonalmuseet – Arkitektur, 6 May – 21 August 2011. The exhibition presents new norwegian architecture and opens tomorrow, and is part of the Year of Architecture 2011. We are participating with the housing project Brinken Terrace and the rest area of Torvdalshalsen.

Hovig north

The exhibition HOVIG I NORD opens at Tromsø kunstforening this Friday February 25 at 20.00. 18 photographies of Jan Inge Hovig's works in Northern Norway by Bent Raanes Sørensen and Sarah Cameron Sørensen show detailed interpretations of the his extraordinary modernist post war architecture.
