Ribas Piera International Prize for Landscape Architecture Schools to The Arctic University of Norway

The Arctic University of Norway has won the Ribas Piera International Prize for Landscape Architecture Schools at the Barcelona International Landscape Biennial. 

As part of the teaching team Magdalena, together with colleague Kjerstin and students Didrik, Sofie and Sverre, represented the landscape master program of UiT.

The Arctic University of Norway presents a curriculum anchored in ecological, cultural and economic reality that draws on history, legislation and assessment processes to independently identify the problems of each project.

Lofoten in Haifa

 Earlier this month Gisle was invited to give a lecture and assess student projects at the Faculty of architecture and town planning, Technion, Haifa, Israel. Focus was on our teaching with most of the examples taken from Layered Landscapes Lofoten.

Layered Landscapes Lofoten

We'll be teaching a master studio at BAS this winter and spring called Layered Landscapes Lofoten

In this master studio we work with Lofoten – one of the most unique and spectacular parts of the Norwegian coast – with a long and dramatic history connected to the sea and the fisheries, and small societies vulnerable to local changes in the fisheries, global impact and structural changes. The landscape is today highly contested due to political desires to start exploiting the oil and gas resources in the region – and not least due to an increasing influx of tourists.
The studio is about research, mapping and planning – providing tools for a possible methodical approach – as an alternative to today’s institutionalized planning regime or hegemonic thinking. The intention is always to stimulate for complex understanding, critical approaches and not least – intentionally a new production of subjectivity.
The studio encourages to open mind sets that are not obvious, predefined or limiting – but always: critical, open minded and curious. This process will be stimulated through texts, literature and lecturers – and not least encounters with various people and knowledge, practices and experiences from the landscape.

Gisle has left for Trondheim where he is assessing diplomas at NTNU this week, like the wooden dome by Steinar Dyvik & John Haddal Mork.

Tromsø Academy of Landscape and Territorial Studies

We are happy that the Tromsø Academy of Landscape and Territorial Studies, TACL, is now officially opened.

After a very nice opening ceremony we were allowed to pay a visit in the soon to be finished new premises of the TACL program in the Mack building.

Some of the people behind the implementation of the Tromsø Academy of Landscape and Territorial Studies at the premises of the new master program:

Gisle Løkken (architect at 70°N and teacher at TACL), Janike Kampevold Larsen (Associate Professor at the Institute of Urbanism and Landscape and coordinator for TACL), Karl Otto Ellefsen (rector at AHO), Ulf Christensen (prev. rector of HiTø) and Alice Labadini (PhD research fellow at AHO and teacher at TACL).

And we are looking forward to meeting the students from all over the world at the master studio Focal Point Biedjovággi that we will teach this winter.
