windy walk

A morning walk in Malmö brought us to Västra Hamnen with the University building by Diener & Diener, the skate park designed by Stefan Hauser, Calatrava's Turning Torso, Monica Gora's bubble green house and the BO01 harbour walk - windy and wintery indeed.

The latest issue of danish planning magazine Byplan, 04/08, presents Øresundsvisioner 2040 and contains two articles by us; Mosaïc::Region - en dialog mellan handlingsrum and Öppenhet som metod.

The Art Academy students (year 1 and 2) invite to their end-of-the-year exhibition at Sjøgata 17.
The opening takes place this Friday, December 12 at 18.00, and the exhibition will be open Saturday and Sunday 12.00-18.00.

Architectural Review

All the awarded projects are published in The Architectural Review December 2008 (#1342), you'll find Torvdalshalsen at page 58.

And this is what the jury said:
'Jury criteria included sensitivity to place and context, awareness of ecological implications, constructional ingenuity, sensitive understanding of materials, and inventiveness in handling space and light. Projects had to demonstrate a clear commitment to improving human life, rather than being preoccupied simply with architecture as art.'
and
'70°N arkitektur's rest area at Torvdalshalsen in the Norwegian Lofoten Islands embodies a gutsy Nordic simplicity of form and clarity of execution. (...) The jury admired the project’s modest Nordic rigour that chimes instinctively with the harsh beauty of its setting.'

¡arRIBA!

We're back after some great days in London and the AR award festivities.
Our Torvdalshalsen will appear together with the other prize-winning projects in the December issue of Architectural Review, some of them really interesting. The projects will also be exhibited at RIBA until the end of February. At RIBA we met (entre autres) Olav Kristoffersen from Brendeland & Kristoffersen who received an award for their Villa Nilsen/Borgen in Trondheim - congratulations!

Glacier talks

Today Gisle gives a lecture at Fehn's Glacier Museum in Fjærland, invited by the Sogn og Fjordane Architect Association for celebrating their 25th anniversary.

Academy Talks

Tromsø Kunstakademi / Academy of Fine Arts is organizing a seminar on its physical framing and future and how this meets reality and political will. In this context several lectures will be given - by university people, artists, politicians.. Magdalena will participate with a talk on experiences from designing for an art school. The event is open for all and takes place Thursday 13th of November at the Art Academy, Strandvegen 8.
Saturday there will be a presentation of the 2nd year students' practice, 12.00-16.00 at the academy, and today 1st year students put the crisis in the centre.. somewhere in Tromsø..

Small report from last week's Paris:
-yes, the right answer to the five clues was of course Villa Savoie, and the clues nothing less than Le Corbusier's cinq points d'une architecture nouvelle: the fundamental principles for the modern movement formulated in 1927.
-Jussieu Atrium and De La Ville Café by Périphériques / Louis Paillard
-St Blaise and great discussion and dinner with Doina Petrescu and Constantin Petcou of atelier d'architecture autogerée.

Gisle is back at the office after the diploma sessions at NTNU, together with fellow assessors Marianne Sætre, Christoffer Harlang and Olav Kristoffersen.

Urban Picturesque

Interesting reflections crossing each other in our mail-box:

-first J is discussing how cities promote themselves with images of splendid nature more than with representations urban surroundings, Tromsø is not (at all..) an exception: read it here (in norwegian).

-then artist Edward C Thomson invites to a presentation of a project called Borderline Picturesque, today wednesday at 19.00 at Kysten:
A picture of Northern Norway had been imprinted in my mind long before even considering working in Tromsø. Infinitely deep fjords and rugged snow covered mountains, a masculine landscape straight out of every mystery adventure I’d eagerly devoured throughout my childhood. The Scanorama in-flight magazine I flicked through on the flight to Tromsø confirmed this image, advocating it as a lifestyle. Seductive imagery of radian couples clad in high performance fabrics out challenging the wilderness. Framed by the rotating airport doors my first gaze upon Tromsø was met by an iridescent sunset carved into by a jagged mountainous silhouette. How is the proximity to the spectacular mediated in this city situated at the border to the picturesque? Has its setting become a product, a myth, a lifestyle with physical effect embedded in the structure of the city? Co-operating with the Tromsø Art Academy I asked eleven students to respond to the image presented on a postcard from the city comparing it to their perceptions of its site of representation. The exhibition event ‘Borderline Picturesque’ brings together these responses.

Art exhibition opening tonight at Tromsø Kunstforening:
Magical Systems; science, technology and art turned into mythical, absurd and fantastic pieces by the artists Agnes Meyer-Brandis, Kristoffer Myskja, Madeleine Park, Mai Hofstad Gunnes, Toril Johannessen, Siri Harr Steinvik, Fredrik Svensson.
In collaboration with Insomnnia Dissmentado (Buenos Aires) performs; Dissmentado – a project from Ismael Pinkler and Maximo Graesse Bondino using field recordings put together into slow motion ambient house tracks.

le Quotidien des Architectes - part one: charretting

For our non-architect readers we will now tell you a little about the everyday life of the architects: what we do when we cannot make it for that party/movie/travel/dentist appointment/tennis match/dinner you proposed..

Life at the architect office contains both hard (and secret, you'll know later) work; see images above taken at 3 am last night, and some glamorous celebrating when good (but secret, you'll know it all soon) news arrive; see pics below taken exactly twelve hours later.

One thing you can notice is that we are happy all the time! You can also see that we never leave our magic machines. It doesn't matter if we're struggeling with last-minute-changes and pdf-exports at five o'clock in the morning or if we're doing some really heavy celebration - this time it was these 0,50€ eskimos, sometimes there is champagne involved.. - to be continued..

This is a brief of a text by prof. urb. Knut Eirik Dahl on our Lofoten projects, that we think is very beautiful - today's little gift to you:

Observation posts in the landscape

“My personal favourite to win, however, would be the Norwegian State Road Administration. Forum AID documented their Tourist Roads project in issue 3.06, such an extremely unconventional and extensive project that during the ten years it has been going on has stimulated a whole new generation of architects.”

70°N arkitektur was represented in the exhibition “Detour” at Norsk Form in 2006 with three projects in Vestvågøy and Austvågøy, Lofoten Islands - one birds observation building, one cyclists’ rest space and one rest area, given form as respectively two small towers and one linear field in the landscape.

The italian architect Franco Purini wrote many years ago a text in Casabella on the menaces to the italian landscape and proposed a (mental) network of observation posts to protect it. The projects in Lofoten can be seen as such posts. The Tourist Routes project as a whole can be seen as such a network. It is this larger idea behind this national project that stimulates the architects to do their utmost.

The projects appear as small scenes on the surface – landscape condensation in built form.

These three projects can and should be seen as ‘a body of work”. They are unbelievably beautiful and will become even more beautiful with the time, and take upon them new qualities. Everybody who keeps up to date have noticed that these three projects are published and discussed in international press, whenever norwegian architecture is presented outside the country’s borders.

It is a global appeal in our time in these simplified constructions, barely visible but so present – on the site.

Mosaïc planning

Today Mosaïc::Region - represented by Gisle, Kjerstin, Knut Eirik and Magdalena - was invited for a presentation and discussion with Tromsø's Planning Director Per Hareide and his crew at the municipality's planning department. Everybody was engaged in the debate on how to plan for unknown futures in a complex and non-linear world..

The research continued by beating up the building (pic2), refill recycled plastic crystals (with the help of a cut off bottle, pic4-5) and then the proud team could put the roof on its place (pic6) and organized a glow in the dark test (below) of the ... - yes, what is it? Let's say best guess gets invited to the inauguration party..
